the war god
mars is close tonight
mars is on the loose
i saw a woman with a tripod
set up at the edge of a crater
she was taking a photograph
or fifty three
mars was unhappy with her
called her a planet paparazzi
but his powers ain't what they used to be
mars has waned
and the wax is off him now
she stood straight up tall
concentrating
making adjustments
her feet were planted firmly
and her movements
betrayed the joy within her
the joy she felt
capturing the god of war
in her little camera

I think I need a stronger lens to shoot Mars ... with any detail, anyway.

Mars was dazzling, overhead, last night around midnight.
I used to have a telescope, back in 5th or 6th grade. It had some issues with "fine focusing," though, so I never got that good a look at anything, really. I did use the refracting scope and a screen to watch a solar eclipse once. (Big deal. I coulda done the same thing with a couple of index cards and a straight pin.)
